What Is Higher Music?
Higher Music is music with purpose. Higher Music is beautiful and functional; it is good for your mind, body and spirit. Higher Music draws from a number of holistic philosophies and technologies to create gentle music that maintains a soothing and introspective mood while guiding your mind to deeper states of consciousness.
Who Is Higher Music?
I am J.S. Epperson and I own Higher-Music.com. I have been working with industry leader The Monroe Institute since 1993. Together with Barbara Bullard, we have pioneered a number of ground breaking Metamusic® Hemi-Sync® titles resulting in some tremendously popular albums that combine my healing music with binaural beat frequencies.
What Are Binaural Beats?
Binaural beats are an audio technology capable of changing your brain’s dominant frequency patterns by engaging the frequency following response. Binaural beats are an integral component of the work I do, but it is by no means the focus. I have used and created music embedded with binaural beats since 1993, and I believe that the combination of designer music and binaural beats is an amazing tool for relaxation, meditation, sleep and reaching other altered states of consciousness.
How Do I Listen To Higher Music?
The best way to listen to Higher Music is to get yourself into a comfortable position, slip on your headphones and listen. This will allow you to get the best results from binaural beats. However, binaural beats are only part of what I do here. My music draws on a number of modalities, traditions and technologies to create music that establishes a soothing musical environment that leads to a physiological response, including brainwave entrainment.
Brainwave Entrainment?
Brainwave entrainment is a natural physiological response; it is a way to synchronize your brainwaves with an external stimulus such as binaural beats, isochronic beats and even plain old rhythm and melody. Entrainment depends upon a “frequency following” response, a naturally occurring phenomenon where the human brain has a tendency to change its dominant frequency pattern towards the frequency of an external stimulus. (In the case of Higher Music, that stimulus is auditory.)
Does Higher Music Contain Subliminal Messages?
No, Higher Music does not utilize any form of subliminal messaging. However, if you are familiar with NLP and the use of affirmations, certain Higher Music titles can improve your intake due to the increased suggestibility of some brain states. I strongly recommend www.affirmuse.com for personalized affirmations and inspiration.
Is Higher Music Safe?
Yes, Higher Music is safe, and the embedded binaural beats and isochronic tones are neither harmful nor addictive. However, there are “buts” and disclaimers:
DO NOT LISTEN TO HIGHER MUSIC IF YOU HAVE EPILEPSY. DO NOT LISTEN TO HIGHER MUSIC WHILE DRIVING. CONSULT A PHYSICIAN BEFORE LISTENING IF YOU HAVE A HISTORY OF SEIZURES, AUDITORY DISORDERS, OR MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS.

One of my favorite CDs to listen to while doing homework. I used it to help me get through my college algebra classes.
Thanks for this one! I love the Milk City song, could’ve been longer though :(
I cannot hear my track Dizzy in the podcast?
Barbara Bullard gives an amazing interview on Music, J.S. Epperson and learning.
You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.
I’m so glad I stumbled upon your post. I agree that Hemisync is by far the most effective method to induce different states of consciousness. I do have two questions which need some clarifying. I hope you can help me out.
Firstly, I came down with a high fever while listening to the Hemi-Sync CDs. Bear in mind that I was trying to cram every CD into 1 week, so I was listening to it 6-8 hours a day. I felt so spaced out for the whole week. What might be causing this?
Secondly, if I burn the CDs into my mp3 player, just for the purpose of being able to have access to them wherever I go, will this distort the frequencies? Thanks
I know of no reason that binaural beat frequencies like Hemi-Sync® would cause fever. I am no doctor, but my guess is that maybe your immune system responded to the enhanced relaxation state as an opportunity to heal. Your experience is rare, to say the least.
Most people experience a physical response when listening to Hemi-Sync® and many feel a little spacey, light headed or expanded after a long term exposure to binaural beats. That’s normal, expected even. I have attended a few programs at the Monroe Institute and those are intense: although there are breaks, we spend 8 – 10 hours a day listening to binaural beats and with no problems.
As for your second question, that topic deserves a longer post, but until I write one, suffice to say that there is a good chance that creating CDs from MP3s will maintain the fidelity needed to perceive the binaural beat frequencies.
I was shocked to read that the actual binaural part of the audio signal is LESS THAN 0.5% of the total audio signal. You can decode binaural mp3 tracks with a program called BAVSA, which lists carrier frequency, binaural beat, and the percentage of the total signal it comprises every 10 seconds over a specified range of frequencies. Monroe Institute is all less than 0.5%, so everything one hears is soundtrack, not binaural. The earphones or earbuds or separated speakers are necessary for the brain to create the following tone. Apparently it does not have to be loud to be effective.
DeltaDream has completely transformed my dream time. My dreams have increased along with my dream recall. DeltaDream it’s amazing
Nice posting. Do you know about these chakra books?

Hi.
Delurking!
Thanks for posting this!
I’m one of those people who practiced TM, strayed, discovered binaural beats quite recently, got really enthousiastic, strayed again…
A busy life gets in the way every time. But if this doesn’t motivate me to get back to regular meditation practice, nothing will :)
Great blog!!! Very informative and Insightful. Excellent!!!
I’ve had two people contact me on Twitter letting me know that it is probably Chinese. Cool!
