It’s inbox question time!

Professor Bullard told me that if we were to transfer Hemi-Sync to a mp3 or some other format it will degrade some of the quality. Cause who really has a CD player anymore. Do you know if the same will happen to Isochronic tones?

I believe that The Monroe Institute (TMI) took an extremely cautious position on MP3 because they didn’t consider how encoding actually works. TMI recommends that you use a lossless format like FLAC or ALAC (Apple Lossless) and let me tell you, this is good advice, but not because of the Hemi-Sync® or binaural beat frequencies, but because of the frequency content of the MUSIC.

Hemi-Sync® and other binaural beat carrier frequencies are usually within a range known as the Oster Curve (generally between 40 Hz and 1340 Hz). This happens to be the same region of frequencies associated with human speech. The human ear is extremely critical of frequencies in this region and therefor audio data compression algorithms essentially ignore this region unless you go encode at a bit rate significantly below 128 kbps.

MP3s, AACs, FLAC, ALAC are all fine formats whether encoding binaural beats, Hemi-Sync® or isochronics. I can even suggest you try a really weird experiment – encode an MP3 of Illumination for Peak Performance at 128 kbps. You will hear a lot of high frequency distortion on one of the bell tracks because the instrumentation is very high in pitch and has a lot of high frequency overtones. While a 128 kbps MP3 will distort the high frequencies, the carrier frequencies and the associated binaural beats and the will be 100% clean. Really! I promise that I’ve tested this. (But that was years ago using the original Fraunhaufer MP3 encoder in a long-forgotten audio editor known as Spark XL made by TC Works, a now defunct software division of TC Electronic. Anyway, excuse the digression.)

If you need more evidence, consider that The Monroe Institute distributed MP3s of their Way Of Hemi-Sync® at 128 kbps for several years. If they would give away a program like that to entice you to buy their other products, would they compromise its effectiveness by using such a low encoder rate? No. They’ve since raised the bit rate but it is still available at 128 kbps on their iPhone app, although I suspect that is AAC, which is a higher quality compression algorithm.

Lullabies have been used to soothe babies since time immemorial. Now, scientists say that premature infants in particular can benefit from combining this tactic with other forms of music therapy, such as simulated womb sounds synchronized to preemies’ vital signs.

The findings, published online in the journal Pediatrics on April 15th, refute earlier studies that suggest all sound is overstimulating to premature babies, showing instead that soft music, closely matched to a preemie’s vital signs, can have clear benefits.

Compared to babies not receiving any music therapies, babies who did showed more positive health effects such as better sleeping and feeding patterns. Those exposed to the ocean disc sounds experienced improved blood-oxygen levels and quiet-alert states. Additionally, parents’ perception of stress in the NICU environment significantly decreased with the interventions, the study said.

Dr. Joseph Awadalla, a neonatologist at Redlands Community Hospital, in California, says that such therapy helps premature infants thrive. He noted that womb-like sounds have been used in some hospitals for at least the last 20 years to soothe and relax babies.

“I’m aware that not all the [NICUs] do this kind of therapy,” Awadalla said. “There should be no obstacle to using it — there just needs to be an understanding from the staff that choosing it will help.”

“Music therapy is on the horizon,” study author Joanne Loewy, director of Beth Israel’s Louis Armstrong Center for Music & Medicine. “The more we can regulate the sound environment, the better they’re going to fare.”

Over the years, small studies have shown that applying certain sounds can not only improve the quality of your sleep, but increase overnight memory retention. Here’s another.

Oscillations in brain activity, which occur during so-called slow-wave sleep, are critical for retaining memories. Recent research shows that playing sounds synchronized to the rhythm of the slow brain oscillations of people who are sleeping enhances these oscillations, improves the quality of sleep and boosts their memory.

Test subjects exposed to sounds stimulating slow oscillation rhythms — such as those found in Hibernation and Deltadream — were better able to remember word associations they had learned the prior evening.

“The beauty lies in the simplicity to apply auditory stimulation at low intensities – an approach that is both practical and ethical, if compared for example with electrical stimulation – and therefore portrays a straightforward tool for clinical settings to enhance sleep rhythms,” said co-author Dr Jan Born, of the University of Tubingen, in Germany.
